Green Santa Claus

At Santa Claus’s workshop in the North Pole, the preparations were fiery. They all been working fast to prepare the gifts of the children of the world and Santa Claus was so busy that he had no time even for his beloved granddaughter, Little Amyrso.

Amyrso, bored by herself, looking at her grandfather’s library, found an album with photos that outside was written: “Pre 1930s Season”. She wiped the dust from the thick cover of the album and opened it with curiosity. “Oh! Who is that? “She shouted confused while watching the photos. She looked more carefully and saw that her grandfather was portrayed in the pictures she had before her. With the same smile, the same red nose, the same sled and the same reindeer. The only difference was that instead of his famous red-colored uniform, he was wearing a green one. At the same time, from the other room, where her grandmother, the Santa Claus wife was cooking the food for the elves, the voice of the television was heard: “This year, ecologists, protesting all over the world about the cutting of millions trees in order to preserve the tradition of Christmas that wants every house to decorate a fir tree”. Immediately in her mind came the words of her grandfather, who every year just returned to the house at dawn after the gifts were distributed to the children of the world, complained that from up there on the sky that he was flying, was seeing fewer trees down to earth. That the ice in the North Pole was melting faster and that at some point they would have to move the entire lab further north. Little Veronica froze. “Why does a Christmas custom hurt nature?” Her eyes filled with tears. One hand touched her head and a hug opened to hold her. “Amyrso … wake me up, you got asleep in front of the TV” listened to her father’s voice. “It was a dream,” she thought, wiping the tears from her eyes. “What dream did you see?” Her father asked her. Amyrso, however, did not have much time to lose. She thought that it was Christmas Eve. In a few hours Santa Claus would also about to visit her own home to bring her a gift. So she took a piece of paper and a pencil and asked her father to write an urgent message to Santa Claus.

“Christmas is a celebration of love” began the dictation and continued: “Love to our fellow humans, animals and nature. On the other hand, there are customs that are connected with the magic of Christmas. But when these customs hurt nature, we either have to stop them or change them. Many times evolution, dictates the return to the past. When you were wearing green-colored clothes and where the houses in my homeland Greece, they adorning boats instead of trees for Christmas. Think of my proposal Santa Claus and start the next year from the North Pole wearing green. I will tell my parents my friends and classmates to decorate boats from now on every Christmas and you will see that in a few years you will tell your granddaughter Amyrso that the slopes have again more trees and that the ice in the North Pole stopped melting and that you might not need to move the lab.
