The heroine “Woman of Olympus”
My admiration for the women of Olympus does not allow me to discriminate. Olympus is a special place. An autonomous place and as the locals proudly say, the only product they needed to import is sugar. Everything else is made by themselves. From the bread, and the clothes, to their shoes (the well-known stivania).
The woman of Olympus or the mother of Olympus, is for the village the most important “component” of its history, its culture, and the daily way of life.
The uniqueness of Olympus is due exclusively to the heroine “Woman of Olympus”. It is part of the history and folklore of the island. Olympitissa, contributes daily, even these days, to the rescue and continuation of the Olympus way of life…
On this trip, I met tireless women. From early in the morning, the wood-fired ovens of the village spreading the aroma of hot bread and local delicacies. They always work there, happy and smiling, wearing and highlighting their costumes with respect and pride. The village managed to survive due to their valuable contribution.
I will never forget the conversation of the old man, in the cafe of Lentakis, in the settlement of Avlona, north of Olympus. They were snacking, gossiping and chatting, while in front of them. Inside the small estates, the Olympitisses were reaping with the scythe. At one point one of these old men decided to leave. “Where are you going? Your wife is still reaping,” informed him the others. “Eee… ok, if it is like that, I will stay…” he replied and they continued…
We thank you “women of Olympus” because you keep the tradition alive and I bow to the greatness of your soul…
